Cairo: Sinai International Bowling Tournament, From 20 To 28 April 2009
By Michele De Capitani
However, there is a huge difference between playing bowling for fun and being professionals, and if you want to see the best bowling players at work you can take part in the several tournaments that take place all over the world, like the Sinai International Bowling Tournament, which is held every year in Cairo. During the tournament (between the 20th and the 28th of April), besides the tourists who usually crowd Cairo’s cheap hotels and sights, in the city there will be also thousands of people taking part in the tournament. The players, men and women coming from all over the world and divided in teams, will fight and compete for the final prize, a 40,000 dollars reward. If you want to watch experienced bowling players at work and you are spending a holiday in Cairo, you can make a foray into the International Bowling Center, where the tournament takes place, and enjoy the show.

The

fact that an important bowling tournament takes place in Egypt is more meaningful in the light of some recent discoveries made about this game: from an archaeological expedition made by the University of Pisa in Narmouthis, an ancient Greek-Roman site 100 km away from Cairo, some finds have come to light, which let us suppose that a game very similar to bowling existed in Egypt in the 3rd century A.D. The finding includes a stone alley with a shallow lane and a pit in the centre of it, and two stone balls, one having the same diameter as the pit and the other having the same diameter as the lane: the aim of the game was probably rolling the smaller ball into the lane trying to make it enter the pit, while the opponent tried to counter the action with the bigger ball. Hence the hypothesis that the origin of bowling might be more ancient than we believe: before the discovery, the first written document asserting the existence of a similar game dated back to the 14th century, to the time of Edward III of England (however, the rules of bowling were standardized only in 1895, during the first American Bowling Congress), but now this sport, or a very similar game, is supposed to have been widespread in Egypt centuries before.

Booking a stay in Cairo between the 20th and the 28th of April you will have the possibility to watch un important bowling tournament in one of the first countries where this sport began to be
widespread.
